The Hive

• amphibian • aquatic • mollusk •

A face that blooms into five thick, fleshy strips to reveal a gaping mouth with needle like teeth. How such a beast evolved is unknown.

born out of the biome itself, the species is native to the upside down and are incapable of reproduction on their own. once hatched, the larvae are left to fend for themselves, seeking out the nearest food and shelter in order to survive. they are opportunistic feeders, known to cannibalize other smaller and weaker larvae they so happen upon. they act as a relative hive mind, an extension of the upside down itself, and are animalistic in nature. highly territorial and extremely dangerous.

the demogorgon life cycle begins with a host, a being from a completely different realm altogether. most hosts don't survive the birthing cycle but when a suitable once is found, an extension of the upside down will penetrate the host orally, in the form of a tendril, and deposit an egg inside it. within a few days, the larvae will emerge, already connected with the rest of the hive mind and ready to fight for survival.

within their newly hatched form, the larvae is roughly the size of a garden slug, with similar coloring in order for it to blend in with the native species. they are fully blind and deaf, still incapable of consuming solid foods, taking in nutrients through their skin instead.

if the larvae survives the most dangerous period of its life cycle, it will soon molt and grow into its second stage, roughly the size of a human palm. their skin is still soft and vulnerable, highly sensitive to hot temperatures, but their newly formed mouth allows them to consume solid meals. short frontal limbs grow, much like mud skippers, giving them much more dexterity to crawl on land.

as it continues to eat, the mollusk will soon take on a greener hue, sprouting hind legs that allows it to be fully quadrupedal, resembling a frog. their skin starts to harden as teeth start to form in its mouth, increasing their food range and causing them to become more carnivorous, although still opportunistic feeders.

after a significant amount of time, the creature will molt again, remerging much larger and now fully carnivores. they are still capable of consuming other types of food but mainly seek out meat. their mouth would be fully formed, splitting its face open in five sections to reveal rows of needle like teeth, and the textured flesh inside their mouth allows them to smell.

the petals allows them to tear apart their prey and the layers of teeth going down their throats allows them to consume them alive, much like sea turtles. roughly the size of a domestic feline, their skin is now harden enough for them to walk in complete sunlight. they are also now capable of communicating using a series of chirps and clicks, the textured skin across their head taking in the sounds in a form of echolocation.

soon enough, the demogorgon will grow into the size of a dog, now strong enough to take on prey many times its size. during this stage is when the creature is capable of returning to its home dimension in the form of tunnels, a much more crude version of the larger known portals. their skin has now harden enough to withstand gunfire.

after going through one last molt, the demogorgon emerges in its final form, fully grown and highly dangerous. their spine has elongated enough for them to walk as a bipedal and their skin is harden enough to withstand fire, although enough of it could still hurt them. their sense of smell becomes highly sensitive, capable of detecting a drop of blood from miles away. during this adult stage is when they are capable of creating proper portals between the upside down and other dimensions.

functionally immortal, an adult demogorgon can only be killed by an external force, either by another demogorgon or the upside down itself. their main purpose in life, their natural born instinct, is to eat and expand their home. the connected hive mind functions via electric currents, causing them effect most technology when near it. they are animals in nature but are also puppets for the living dimension's will.

  • depending on the host, the demogorgon can adapt to whatever environment they are born in

  • their bodies are built to absorb all nutrients, meaning they are incapable of pooping

  • their scent glands are located in their mouth, causing them to constantly move their petals in order to taste/smell the air

  • they hear via echolocation and vibrations, the folds and wrinkles on their faces picking up on any sounds

  • their feet are padded, indicating them as ambush predators

  • although they are usually solitary animals, some packs may form over time, where communal grooming and play activities take place

  • they go through molts much like reptiles, shedding old skin to reveal newer, toucher skin

  • once the larvae grow mouths, they will take the opportunity to eat other, smaller larvae

  • they can purr, the deep vibrations signaling happiness and contentment

  • although their home dimension is warm and wet, demogorgons are warm blooded

  • natural born swimmers and enjoy water very much

The Fog

• friends • foes • fiends •

Devouring every last morsel of flesh and gore, the creature is untouched by any sense of compassion or restraint.

a familiar face but he does not know why. where are the others? is she alone now? why is she so angry? what did he do wrong?

cares not for why she's here but the loud yapping thing beside her smells divine and he is oh so very hungry...

... is this a child?

a little thief, a sneaky bandit on territory not of his own... and has food!

footsteps thump, thump, thumping on the ground. heartbeat thump, thump, thumping in her chest. she is aware but not aware enough. faster and faster, how fast can she go?

blood and rust, iron and guilt, emotions he still has trouble comprehending, fear that licks at his bones and tastes bitter in his mouth... but perhaps the creature is friendly?
